Late Nights, the Library, and Studying

Not surprisingly, there has already been some late nights.  There never seems to be enough time to do all the reading, brief all the cases, and get them into my computer as well.  I conflicting goals of trying to get home at a reasonable time while also getting most of my work done to free up time on the weekends for my family.

With the exception of Fridays, the library is open until midnight everyday, Friday is 10pm.  The library also opens at 8am on weekdays and a bit later on weekends.  I looked around a some other law libraries and they also close at midnight.  I assume it must be an ABA requirement to close around that time.  I have already been in there a few times when the warning of 10 minutes to close comes over the intercom.  It is a sad feeling.  Not the having to leave, but still being there.

The library is a very nice.  They have all the single cubbies but also the group tables.  They also have group tables that have windows on three sides and jut out from the building.  In the early evening they tend to become empty.  I like to sit there around that time to watch as the sun goes down and the city’s lights come on.  I also like the healthier light coming in from the windows and being able to see something other than a wall or a book.

On the days when I have a lot of reading to do (almost everyday), I will bring my lunch into the library and eat while I read.  My lunch is a pretty predictable peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a water.  Since I am in the library I can read right through lunch and feel more productive after.  But, I have the days when I just need to sit in the courtyard, listen to Bloomberg Radio on my phone, and eat without reading any law school books.  At least once a week I have to do this.  I need to stay sane.

Now that we are a few weeks in, I really need to start outlining for my classes.  I have not begun that yet but really need to.  I am planning to start meeting with one of my TAs to help with outlining.

Back to reading.
